1937 - moved with mother to Montgomery AL
- won a talent contest and formed his own band, the Drifting Cowboys - working in clubs as local celebrity
1944 - married Audrey Sheppard, who became his manager
1946 - first recordings for Sterling - Fred Rose (from Acuff-Rose) secured a contract with MGM Records and acted as Williams' manager record producer and co-writer
1947 - recordings for Sterling and MGM
1948 - joined the radio show Louisiana Hayride, which was a great sucessa and Williams and the Drifting Cowboay became regulars
- Williams had some greates hits the following years (Lovesick Blues, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, Long Gone Lonesome Blues, Cold, Cold Heart, Hey, Good Lookin', Jambalaya...) - was drinking heavily, took drugs (excessive painkillers for his back (was born with a spine defect), played with guns, destroyed hotel rooms, permanently lived in conflict...
1949 - appeared on Health & Happiness shows, Nashville TN - appeared on Johnny Fair Syrup Radio Show, Shreveport LA
from 1950 - began to record under the pseuony "Luke the Drifter" for his religious-themed recordings
1951 - Mother's Best shows broadcasted live on WSM out of Nashville TN
1952 - was divorced, Opry fired him (being told that he could return when he was sober), lost Fred Rose's support and the Drifting Cowboys turned to Ray Price - playing small clubs with pick-up bands - married Billie Jean Jones
January 1, 1953 Oak Hill WV, Hank Williams died on the way to a concert in Canton OH, due to 'severe heart attack with haemorrhage', alcohol and pills played their part
