You Are My Sunshine (Jimmie Davis)

today registrated for copyright (each both music and lyrics) are Jimmie H. Davis, John S. Hurt (Mississippi John Hurt), Jamie Foxx, R.F. Bailey and others [GEMA]

Paul Rice claimed to have composed it in 1937, sold it to Jimmie Davis

Jan. 30, 1940 Jimmie Davis published it, with "words and music by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell," with the Southern Music Publishing Company of New York, renewed 1977 (that time it was declared as state song of Louisiana)

It is claimed that Oliver Hood wrote "You Are My Sunshine."  He wrote the words to the song on the back of a brown paper sack, which his children still possess

This song is one of two official songs for the State of Louisiana

TOP

... and further vocal and instrumental versions...

The other night, dear,
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
But when I woke, dear,
I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cried.

You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are grey.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

I'll always loved you
And make you happy.
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me
To love another
You'll regret it all some day.

You are my sunshine...

You told me once, dear
You really loved me
That no one else could come between.
But now you've left me
And love another,
You have shattered all my dreams.

You are my sunshine...

ad. lyrics by Norman Blake:
In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So wont you come back
and make me happy
I'll forgive you, I'll take all the blame.

add. Lyrics:
(Louisiana my Louisiana
The place where I was borne.
White fields of cotton
-- green fields clover,
The best fishing and long tall corn.

You are my sunshine...

Crawfish gumbo and jambalaya
The biggest shrimp and sugar cane,
The finest oysters
And sweet strawberries
From Toledo Bend to New Orleans.

You are my sunshine...)
